A New Look at Boxing
Definitions and Examples.
Prism - A three-dimensional figure determined by two congruent polygons in parallel planes whose corresponding vertices are connected by segments. Example of a hexagonal prism. More examples of prisms.
Polygons - A closed shape formed by straight lines that only intersect at the ends. Examples.
Bases - The two congruent and parallel faces.
Lateral faces - The parallelograms formed by joining the corresponding vertices of the bases of the prism.
Area - Measures the size of the region enclosed by the polygon. This is usually expressed in terms of some square unit. Examples of finding area of polygons and circles. Examples of finding surface area of irregular regions.
Surface area - The sum of the areas of a prisms bases and lateral faces. Examples of finding surface area. Examples of finding surface area of a cylinder.
Template - Two dimensional pattern with tabs that can be folded to make a three dimensional solid.
Net - Two dimensional pattern without tabs that can be folded to make a three-dimensional solid.
Apothem - The segment whose measure is the perpendicular distance from the center of a regular polygon to one of its sides. Example.
Tessellate - A shape that is repeated to form a pattern that covers an entire plane without overlaps or gaps. Examples of shapes that tessellate.
Practice tessellating.

Exterior angle of a polygon - An exterior angle formed by any side of a polygon and the extension of its adjacent side. The measure is found by the formula: 360/number of sides. Examples of an exterior angle.
Interior angle of a polygon - The angles on the interior of the polygon formed by each pair of adjacent sides. The measure is found by the formula: 180 - exterior angle. Examples of an interior angle.

Central angle of a polygon - The angle subtended at the center of the polygon by one of its sides. Examples.
Cross sections - The shape you get when you slice through an object. Examples. Interactive activity.
