Some of the topics that we will be covering in our Algebra/Geometry I classroom are area, probability, linear equations, volume, line of best fit, exponential growth, direct and inverse relationships, and ratio and proportion.
While working on volume, we also look at rates at which water flows and create lines of best fit. We learn to do this with pencil and paper but also discover the equation of the line much easier with the graphing calculator!
While working on exponential growth, we simulate the reproduction of "skeeters" with the aid of Skittles and look for patterns that are occurring.
While investigating direct and inverse relationships, we simulate oil spills in water and on land. We simulate an oil spill on the ocean using a few drops of oil in a dish of water. We simulate an oil spill on land by placing drops of oil on sheets of paper. We also investigate the relationship between the depth of a spill and the area it covers.
While working on ratio and proportion, we take measurements of our feet and arms and compare them to Robert Wadlow, the world's tallest man.
