When to Deviate from the Mean Task
Definitions and Examples.
Histograms - These are used to display information using rectangles or bars. Examples.
Pie charts - These are also known as circle graphs and consist of circular regions divided into sectors that each represent a whole. Examples.
Frequency table - A table that consists of two columns with one column containing data items and the other column containing the number of observed occurrences of that item. Examples.
Measures of central tendency - The data that are described as the representative of the numbers in a data set. They are the mean, median, and mode. Examples. More examples. Examples with your graphing calculator.
Mean - The average of a set of data. Examples.
Median - The middle of a set of data. Examples.
Mode - The piece of data that occurs most often.
Stem-and leaf plot - A method of organizing numerical data in order of place value. The 'ones digit' and the 'tens digit and greater' of each data item is separated as leaves and stems respectively. Examples.
Back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot - A method of organizing two sets of data. Examples. More examples.
Range - A measure of spread found by subtracting the least data value form the greatest data value. Example.
Lower quartile - The median of the lower half of the data points.
Upper quartile - The median of the upper half of the data points.
Interquartile range - The difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile.
Examples of medians, quartiles, and interquartile ranges.
Outliers - The extreme data values more than 1.5 times the interquartile range above the upper quartile or below the lower quartile. Examples.
Box-and-whisker plot - A display of the median, lower quartile, upper quartile, and outliers (if any) of a data set. Examples. Examples with your graphing calculator.
Mean absolute deviation - The measure of a spread that describes the average distance from the mean for the numbers in a data set. The average of the absolute value of the difference between the individual values in the data set and the mean. Examples.
Standard deviation - Another measure of a spread. Examples. More examples.
